Overview

Located in the heart of Berlin on Karl-Liebknecht-Str., Hofbrau Wirtshaus Berlin offers an authentic German dining experience that blends tradition with vibrant atmosphere. This restaurant captures the spirit of a classic Bavarian beer hall, complete with long communal tables, staff dressed in traditional attire, and lively Bavarian music that brings the space alive, especially in the evenings.

The culinary focus here is firmly rooted in hearty German classics. The pork knuckle (Schweinshaxe) stands out as a signature dish — richly prepared, succulent, and paired traditionally with sauerkraut and dumplings. Guests have consistently praised this dish for its depth of flavor and authentic preparation, setting a high standard for German comfort food in Berlin. Other notable dishes include the Hofbräu Meat Platter, the warm Apfelstrudel, the caramelized Kaiserschmarrn, and the flavorful Obazda, a Bavarian cheese delicacy. For those craving schnitzel or sausage, options like Schnitzel Wiener Art and curry sausage provide classic tastes with a satisfying twist.

What truly elevates the experience at Hofbrau Wirtshaus is the beer. Drawing inspiration from the Munich Hofbräuhaus, their beer is poured from traditional barrels and served in generous sizes, including the iconic one-liter stein. Especially during Oktoberfest season, this beer hall transforms into a hub of festivity, energy, and camaraderie, closely mirroring the legendary Munich beer halls but with its own unique Berlin flair.

The space is designed to foster social connection. With communal seating and a lively ambiance, it invites both locals and travelers looking for an immersive cultural experience. Visitors have appreciated the friendliness of the staff—many speak excellent English and provide thoughtful recommendations, ensuring the menu is approachable and the atmosphere welcoming.

Hofbrau Wirtshaus appeals to a diverse crowd—families, tourists eager to experience German traditions, beer enthusiasts, and anyone craving robust, flavorful meals in an engaging environment. Given its popularity, booking ahead is advisable, especially during busy periods like Oktoberfest. The location’s proximity to Alexanderplatz makes it a convenient stop on any Berlin itinerary.

In essence, Hofbrau Wirtshaus Berlin offers more than just a meal; it’s a celebration of Bavarian heritage rendered through food, beer, and atmosphere. Whether you come for the pork knuckle, the lively music, or the authentic beer hall vibe, this restaurant promises a memorable taste of Germany right in the bustling heart of Berlin.

Hofbräu Wirtshaus Berlin was a highlight during my trip to Berlin. I happened to visit the day before Oktoberfest 2025 and asked if they could help me get a single ticket (since online you could only buy whole tables). The hostess was extremely kind and came through with a printed ticket. I showed up early the next day. Once inside, it wasn’t the standard “tent” experience—it felt like a true German beer hall, full of energy. The Oktoberfest-barrel-poured beer was outstanding and easily ranks among my favorites. For food, I ordered the pork knuckle. With the crowd and scale of the event, I expected cafeteria-style fare—but this was far better. It was rich, well-prepared, and surprisingly impressive for an event that size. If you go to Berlin around Oktoberfest, this is a spot you shouldn’t miss.

I come here every time I'm visiting Berlin. The atmosphere is fantastic, I love the roasted pork knuckle with sauerkraut and dumplings, and the best part is the one-liter beer. I suggest booking online or by phone before coming here, as it's difficult to get in without a reservation.

We were served by Dimitri who was super friendly and spoke great English, he was also very helpful with the menu options. We settled for the pork knuckle and it was absolutely delicious and the Oktoberfest bier is really really good. We just wished the lunchtime background music was a slightly louder to give a bit more atmosphere, but overall we had a great experience here.

Nearby to Alexanderplatz Very lively and festive “German beer-hall” experience in Berlin. Staff in traditional attire, long communal tables like canteen . Enjoyed traditional Bavarian band playing during the evening, Traditional Bavarian dishes (e.g., Schweinshaxe/pork knuckle) and authentic beer from Munich

Fun and lively experience on a Sunday afternoon. Our waitress was great and made recommendations to accommodate food allergies and even had homemade pretzel earrings. The band was great, the pork knuckle was the best I’ve ever had and the curry sausage was amazing.

This place is basically Oktoberfest on repeat—loud, crowded, full of clichés, and somehow open year-round. Honestly, it’s the kind of spot you drag visitors to so they can get a taste of “Berlin-Germany” without having to wait until actual Oktoberfest. Beer, music, sausages—you know the drill. But then there’s… the pizza. Except it’s not really pizza, it’s pizza made on pretzel dough. Sounds like an abomination, right? That’s what I thought too. And yet, against all odds, it wasn’t terrible. Tasted kind of like a frozen pizza you’d grab at the supermarket, but edible enough to make you pause and think, “Why does this work… even a little?” Would I come here for the pizza? Absolutely not. Would I order it again after a couple of beers? Maybe. Let’s just say the beer is the main reason to go, but the pretzel-pizza hybrid is the weird little twist that makes this place oddly memorable.

Love an authentic German experience? Well don't go past the hofbrau pubs. There are a few around and this one in Berlin is excellent. They are not cheap but always a great feed and of course great beer. The service is always first class, love it!

Food was nice and authentic, however it was a little bit pricey. If you are looking for a good atmosphere and food, then I recommend giving this franchise a go. Unfortunately I felt a member of staff was a little abrupt with me when questioning about the status of my meal. Shame as it stopped the experience from being 5 stars.
